Designing the master bedroom always feels slightly more challenging because it’s usually larger. For us, it’s one of the best rooms to design – more space is more potential for comfort, and there are so many excellent design ideas that put comfort as the centrepiece.
Below, we’ll give you some of the top tips for designing the primary bedroom with comfort as the centerpiece.
A Neutral Color Palette
According to Architectural Digest, the best way to create comfort is with a neutral color palette. Thank god the trend of bold colors has gone. If you think about it, nothing about anything bright and loud is comforting. Neutral, soft colors do create that peaceful oasis.
White or cream walls are a great start. You can then add slightly warmer tones coming from pillows, throws, and lamps—it’s the perfect minimalist design. You can still add pops of color, but the main foundation should be a soothing neutral so you don’t feel overstimulated.
Symmetry and a Comfy, Centered Bed
Similarly to colors, you don’t want to overdo it and arrange your bedroom so it’s mismatched without symmetry.
We would argue that it almost doesn’t matter what the rest of the room looks like, as long as you have a comfy bed to sink into. A king-size mattress is big enough to be the centrepiece of the room to create balance and serenity within the space.
You can then design the rest of the room around the most important centerpiece—that will always be the bed, and it never seems to look right if it’s off-centre.
Add a Seating Area if Possible
Primary bedrooms are usually slightly bigger than average, and it can sometimes feel like there’s too much space to know what to do with.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing.
If you have a gap to fill after the rest of the furniture is in the bedroom, adding a seating area is the perfect way to keep comfort as the centerpiece of the room. It can be a little reading nook with a floor lamp hanging above the chair or a sophisticated pouf that’s nothing more than a space filler.
Use Patterned Textiles to Add Some Character
You can now think about adding those pops and colors and a bit of character with patterned textiles—but don’t go too over the top; comfort is still the focus. These are the finishing details that make the room.
Some of the best textile patterns to consider are:
- Floral
- Checkered
- Stripes
- Watercolor
- Geometrics
You don’t need to overdo it, or you’ll start to create chaos. Just a few patterned pillows or perhaps a patterned lampshade is enough to make sure the room isn’t a completely neutral, dull environment.
Designing a bedroom with comfort as the centerpiece isn’t so difficult—with a comfy bed and a neutral color palette, you can do anything. It’s the perfect base to build on, and as long as you don’t overdo it and add too much clutter or too many colors, your primary bedroom will be your personal haven.
